Barbara Jill Walters was an American broadcast journalist and television personality who lived from September 25, 1929, to December 30, 2022. Walters, known for her interview skills and popularity with viewers, hosted a number of television shows, including Today, the ABC Evening News, 20/20, and The View. From 1951 until her retirement in 2015, Walters was a working journalist.
In the early 1960s, Walters began her career on The Today Show as a writer and segment producer of women’s interest stories. Because of her popularity with viewers, Walters received more airtime, and in 1974, she became the program’s co-host, the first woman to hold such a position on an American news program.
In 1976, she continued to be a trailblazer for women in broadcasting by becoming the first female co-anchor of a network evening news program, the ABC Evening News, alongside Harry Reasoner. Walters worked as a producer and co-host on the ABC news magazine 20/20 from 1979 to 2004. She was also well-known for her annual ABC special, Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People.
